Description

Emergency Contraception (Plan B, Morning-After Pill)
- Used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
- Most effective when taken within 72 hours of intercourse.

- Found in some intrauterine devices (IUDs) like Mirena, Skyla, and Kyleena.
- Used in birth control pills (combined with estrogen or alone in progestin-only pills).

- Used in contraceptive implants like Jadelle and Norplant for long-term birth control.
Mechanism of Action
- Prevents ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary).
- Thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.
- Alters the uterine lining to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg.
Dosage & Administration
- Emergency Contraception: Typically 1.5 mg as a single dose or two 0.75 mg doses taken 12 hours apart.
- Birth Control Pills: Taken daily, as prescribed.
